What is in the box?

Overview:

Established as an annual subscription service set to be delivered every two months, budding scientists can look forward to receiving a new and exciting box of thrilling science experiments arriving on their doorstep six times per year.

Each box has a science theme and all experiments and learning contained within relate to that theme. The themes for year one are as follows:

  • Box One: Sensory Science
  • Box Two: Glow in the Dark
  • Box Three: Rainbow Science
  • Box Four: Edible Science
  • Box Five: Explosions and Eruptions
  • Box Six: Geology and Geodes
  •

So give me an example of what I will experience...

    What’s in the Box?

ChemKits4 Kids is primarily about learning and building excitement around how cool and interesting science can be. We aspire to create curiosity in our budding scientists and for our kits to build confidence and connection, encouraging families to work together and develop a shared love of understanding how the world works and why. That’s what science does. It helps us to make sense of things. It motivates us to ask ‘why’ and ‘how’. And it encourages understanding rather than just rote learning, making it is much easier for us to actually remember the lessons learnt.

Each box contains the method, equipment and materials needed for at-home scientists to conduct all of the experiments. Occasionally, advanced options or variations are suggested which may require additional materials not supplied, but these will be readily accessible and very possibly easily found at home.

    We all learn differently!

    We sure do!

But we’ve got that covered too.

For those who love to read and like to understand the science behind the science, each box has a clear learning objective and a formal theory section. This explains the scientific terms or concepts behind the practical experiments.

For those who are kinesthetic learners, we know you just want to get stuck in, roll up your sleeves and get going with the hands-on part. You love to learn through tactile, physical activity and this is one of the main reasons we wanted to deliver your very own ChemKit right to your door. It’s just not as much fun to passively watch a demonstration in class or have to sit still while you read about it in a book, you love to be an active participant!

And for those who love science to be a team sport – we have made a video so you can play along with us! Just scan the QR code and you’ll be able to follow the step-by-step instructions for each science experiment as we do them ourselves at home with you.

How do we know we’re learning, not just having fun or making a big mess in the kitchen?

Great question, so glad you asked!

Whilst we absolutely want the focus to be on the practical part because that’s where the fun is at, we also want to make sure you understand the key scientific concepts and the how and why. That’s where you can turn to the ‘Objective’ and ‘Formal Learning’ guides in your ChemKits.

Objective: this part explains what the science theme is for that ChemKit and introduces the key concepts. There might be some new scientific words that you don’t know but that will all be explained in the formal learning section, so don’t stress.

Formal Learning: this is where you go to understand in words what’s really happening in your science experiments. Here, scientific terms related to the theme and key concepts for your ChemKit will all be defined and explained. We’ll also share why the science does what it does in the practical experiments, so you understand exactly what is happening and why. This is the section to read when you want to sound super intelligent and prove to your parents, friends and teachers, just how much you are actually learning.
